Two anchored cargo vessels collided with each other in Singapore waters, sending around 10 containers toppling from one vessel to another.  Another container has reportedly fallen into the sea water this Friday.

The two cargo container vessels were anchored at Eastern Bunkering “A” near the Singapore Harbour off Changi Naval Base when the accident occurred.

The cargo vessel dragged its anchor and reportedly collided the bow of another cargo vessel. The reason for collision is suspected due to prevailing strong ocean currents.  It is believed to be the first case of an anchor drag collision happening in Singapore waters.  The vessel sustained minor dents and was anchored safely after the collision.

The container that fell into the sea has been successfully retrieved and the necessary measures to remove the 10 containers from the cargo ship are underway.

Mr. Eugene Cheng, a lawyer specialising in shipping litigation from Gurbani and Co LLC, said: “One of the most common reasons why vessels collide is because of the failure of the crew to maintain a proper lookout.”

MPA is investigating the incident.
