A man who died on board one of the three ‘ghost ships’ moored off Tynemouth was one of the staff employed to maintain it, it has been confirmed.

The victim, a Ukraine national, was one of 16 staff working on the vessel Brasschaat at the time of the tragedy.

Police said the body of the man had been recovered and brought to North Shields.

It would appear he has fallen from a height onto the deck of the ship and sustained fatal injuries.

His family in the Ukraine have been informed of the death and are being supported by the shipping company.

The ship workers are all employed by Bernhard Schulte Ship Management, the firm hired to oversee the upkeep of the vessels ahead of them being auctioned off.

A spokesperson for the company said: “He was one of our crew members serving on the vessel who carry out ship board duties.

“The next of kin have been informed and a full investigation will be launched.”

The Brasschaat, along with the Vyritsa and Zarechenskare, are owned by Belgian company Sobelmar, which is known to have hit problems as long ago as March 2015.

They have been anchored a mile off the North East coast for four to five months.

It is believed the victim was involved in a fall from an upper to a lower deck.
