The ship Maersk Patras arrives at Las Palmas after a fire and left to drift
A container ship belonging to the Maersk line has reportedly caught fire and source of the fire have been narrowed down due to a failure in the engine room.
On November 1st, the engine room of the 1998-built container ship Maersk Patras caught fire in the early morning hours while the vessel was off the coast of Las Palmas, en route to Conakry, Danish shipping firm Maersk Line confirmed.
“The fire was quickly controlled by the crew on board and heat development from the site of the fire has ceased,” Maersk Line said.
However, due to the location of the fire, the vessel is being diverted to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain.
Maersk added that “We continue to monitor the site of the fire and upon arrival in Las Palmas we will further investigate to establish the extent of damage and any impact to the vessel’s seaworthiness”.
Research and assessment of damage caused by fire will take place in Las Palmas, where technicians have already been deployed in Maersk. There were no people injured during the incident and no damage of the cargo on board. The ship Maersk Patras has a total length of 210 meters and a draft of up to 11.70 meters. The deadweight of the ship is 37,842 tons.
