On November 20, as powerful Storm Angus lashed parts of UK, a cargo ship crashed into another vessel near Dover.  All twenty-three crew members were safely evacuated from the cargo ship, which has started taking on water after being involved in a collision with a barge, the Coastguard has said.

The cargo ship, called Saga Sky, is believed to have lost engine power and, crashed into the barge full of rocks as it made its way past Folkestone and Dover.

The UK Coastguard says it received a distress call from the Hong Kong-flagged Saga Sky at around 7:20 a.m. Sunday reporting it had lost power and steering.  Weather caused the ship to drift into a rock barge at the Varne Bank approximately three miles southwest of Dover.

The hull of the Saga Sky was damaged in the collision and the ship was taking on water.  The vessel has been moved to a safe anchorage at Dungeness.

Steve Carson, the duty commander of the agency, said it had dealt with a major incident on Sunday morning in particularly challenging conditions with “HM Coastguard helicopters from Lydd and Lee-on-Solent on the scene”.

Winds of 80mph were recorded at Langdon Bay on the Kent coast on Sunday morning and a gust swept into Guernsey at 84mph.

The eye of the storm moved out into the North Sea, leaving in its wake power cuts and floods.

Cross-channel ferry services were subject to delays on Sunday.
