The story:

A car carrier reportedly caught fire when it arrived at Kaiser Port in Bremerhaven, Germany.

What happened?

The ship identified as a car carrier ‘Emerald Leader’ belonging to NYK caught fire at Kaiser Port in Bremerhaven, Germany.

The transformer in one of the compartments was inflamed and the lower decks were filled with smoke.  The fire was immediately reported to the local authorities and they arrived at the scene of the fire with shore firefighting teams.

Luckily, the fire was small and was quickly extinguished, but firefighters needed more time in ventilating the ship’s decks.

The local authorities ordered safety inspection and special survey before restarting cargo handling operations.  However, the car carrier did not suffer any major damages and was released to return to service.

An investigation into the root cause of the fire is under way.  There were no injured people and no water pollution during the accident.  According to preliminary information, the reason for the fire was technical malfunction in the transformer, which inflamed after overheating.
