A major rescue involving the Lee on the Solent Coastguard rescue helicopter took place in the Solent.  It is understood that the rescue helicopter has been requested to winch off a male from the Korea registered Glovis Comet.

A winchman was lowered onto the deck of the vessel.  It was reported that the crew member was prepared to be medically evacuated from the container ship.

The man was successfully winched onto the rescue helicopter and was flown to the QA hospital in Portsmouth.

A spokeswoman for the MCA said, “The ship radioed for assistance using the marina radio informing us (UK Coastguard operation Centre at Fareham) that a member of the ship’s crew on board the cargo ship had been taken ill at about 1.15pm this afternoon.  We have sent the coastguard rescue helicopter 104 to the scene who sent a winchman paramedic down to the man and it’s our intention to winch the man from the vessel to the hospital for treatment”.
