IMO Secretary inaugurates Panama Maritime Conference

On 12th March, IMO Secretary General; Mr. Kitack Lim inaugurated the bi-annual Conference-exhibition Panama Maritime, this year in its 13th version.

Also present were Mr. Alvaro Aleman, Minister of the Presidency in the representation of President Juan Carlos Varela, International and local personalities of the maritime industry.

Held every two years:

Panama Maritime is held every two years and is organized alternatively by the Panama Maritime Chamber and the Panamanian Maritime Law Association. This year the Organizing Committee was presided by Panamanian Maritime Law Association represented by Lawyer Flor Torrijos, from the Intermaritime Group who thanked the attendees for their presence at the event that gathered around 300 delegates with some 30 exhibitors and important leaders of the maritime industry of Panama and experts from more than 50 countries.

The IMO Secretary General offered a current vision of the maritime industry, its challenges and the new regulations that will be implemented mainly for the protection of the marine environment and “to enhance the efficiency of maritime trade” while “listening to the needs of the maritime industry.” Mr. Lim congratulated Panama’s “great achievement in celebrating 100 years of the Ship Registry and the major contribution it represents to the maritime sector.”

At the end of the opening ceremony, awards were made to relevant industry players, including Carnival Cruise Line, Quinn Oil, and the Panama Canal Administrator, Jorge Luis Quijano, who was chosen as the “Maritime Personality of the Year”.

The Conference-Exhibition, the largest of its kind in Latin America, aims at bringing together players in the maritime industry to find new and proactive solutions to the most important challenges facing the sector today and those projected in the future.

The Conference that runs until Wednesday began with the participation of Jorge Barakat, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority who gave a historic round-up on the centenary Panama Ship Registry and of Jorge L.Quijano, Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority who explained the Canal performance post-expansion with considerations on the shipping alliances.

The following days will see presentations on the LNG impact on the maritime industry, the implementation of the Agreement on Ballast Water Management and the economic effects of the Canal expansion in the maritime and logistics industry.
