Container ship Maersk Genoa reportedly collided with general cargo ship Dan Fighter in northern Europe.
What happened?
Container ship Maersk Genoa reportedly collided with general cargo ship Dan Fighter at Borssele between Breskens and flushing on the Wester Scheldt.
There were no injuries or lost containers from the collision, but the container ship suffered a breach at the stern above the waterline.
Tug Union 5 dispatched:
Belgium-flagged tug Union 5 was sent to the scene of a ship crash near the Netherlands.
Dan Fighter was able to resume its voyage from Bilbao to Antwerp, but 1992-built Union 5 was standing by Maersk Genoa at the time of writing. Maersk Genoa had just left Antwerp bound to Bremerhaven.
Increasing dependence on tugs:
This is at least the second time that tugs have been called to a Maersk Line ship for support during an incident. In January, Gustav Maersk ran aground in the Strait of Messina in southern Italy while sailing from Croatia to Gioia Tauro in Italy and needed tug assistance.
Over the weekend, two Megatugs vessels assisted a disabled cargo ship, 1999-built Ceyda Aytekin (7,290 dwt) after it suffered engine failure in the Aegean Sea, north of the island of Andros.
The ship as laden with 4926.5 tonnes of copper and was en route from Agadir to the Black Sea. Tugs operated by Megalohari Hellenic Tugboats Salvage & Towage were sent to the stranded ship.
