One Ton Bunker-savings a Day for OSV with ESS Retrofit

Corvus Energy’s Orca energy storage systems (ESS) has been selected by Wärtsilä to provide battery power to Eidesvik’s Viking Princess.

Energy storage system:

Corvus said on Tuesday that the company would supply lithium-ion-based energy storage systems for the retrofit of the Viking Princess offshore supply vessel.

To remind, Wärtsilä signed an agreement with Eidesvik Offshore to install a hybrid system with batteries on board the Viking Princess OSV.

World’s first OSV:

Wärtsilä said that the vessel would become the first OSV in which batteries reduce the number of generators on board. The new hybrid technology will be installed in September 2017.

The Viking Princess is the second Eidesvik vessel to adopt Corvus’ energy storage system, following the Viking Lady.

Hybrid arrangement:

The 533kWh Orca Energy ESS will be installed on the vessel in a hybrid arrangement which will replace one LNG generator resulting in one tonne of fuel savings per day.

Halvard Hauso, Corvus Energy’s SVP of business development, said: “The first Eidesvik ship powered by a Corvus ESS, the Viking Lady, has become a well-known industry case study of a hybrid-electric vessel. We are excited to demonstrate on the Viking Princess that the well-documented benefits of an ESS on offshore vessels can be achieved at a lower cost to ship owners, thereby improving the economic rationale for such deployments.”
