Ship Runs Aground! International Marine Traffic Halted

1963

On August 14, a container ship reportedly ran aground on the bank of a river, while bringing the traffic to a complete halt in the World’s busiest port.

What happened?

The container ship ‘CSCL Jupiter’ ran aground on the banks of the river Scheldt. The river Scheldt connects Antwerp, Europe’s second-biggest port to the North Sea.

The traffic to and from the Antwerp port was brought to a complete halt after the container ship reportedly ran aground. Nearly 15 vessels have been stranded at the port due to the stricken vessel blocking their path.

The port of Antwerp is the 15th largest container port in the world and handles 214 million tonnes of maritime freight each year, covering a space of 20,000 football fields.

Ship towed:

The port officials were trying to tow the containership towards the port so that the traffic may flow easily but low tide conditions on the river has prevented the towing operation from being carried out. Finally, it took the help of 15 tugs to move the stricken ship which was blocking access to the Antwerp port.
