On September 26, nearly 87 people were hurt when a passenger ship collided with a huge rock formation.
What happened?
The passenger ship ‘M/V Matilde’ was enroute from Odiongan to the island of Romblon when it collided with a rock formation in Romblon province early morning Tuesday.
Passengers injured:
The vessel was carrying 251 passengers out of which 87 passengers were injured during the collision. The vessel collided with a large rock formation in the vicinity of Calatrava town.
Supt. Imelda Tolentino, information officer of the Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan (Mimaropa) police said, “The impact injured several passengers and caused damages to at least four vehicles on the ship”.
Zero visibility causes collision:
The captain has stressed that the accident occurred due to zero visibility caused by heavy rainfall and it also encountered steering problems.
Quoting the ship captain Bernardino Canapit, Tolentino said, “Heavy rains resulted in a “zero visibility” in the sea and the ship encountered a steering problem”.
Admitted in hospital:
The injured passengers were brought to the nearest hospital by joint rescue personnel from Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, Bureau of Fire Protection, Red Cross Romblon, Rural Health Unit, and police for medical attention.
An investigation had been launched and the Philippine Coast Guard is investigating the incident.
