Explosion Onboard Ship Kills Two and Injures Three

On October 4, an explosion onboard a vessel reportedly claimed the lives of two members while injuring three.

What happened?

The incident occurred onboard the vessel ‘MTS Explorer’ while it was sailing in the vicinity of Cornish coast. Two crew members were killed while three others were injured in the explosion caused by a compressed air cylinder.

Injured crew members airlifted:

The UK Coastguard received a distress call from the vessel and the Newquay Coastguard helicopter was immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident. The injured crew members were airlifted to Derriford Hospital for further medical treatment with one crew member reported to be in a serious condition.

The Royal Navy Fleet Auxiliary ship ‘Tidespring’ and a Fishery Protection vessel are assisted with rescue operations. The vessel was towed to the port of Falmouth by the Fowey All Weather Lifeboat. An investigation has been launched to determine the sequence of events leading to the explosion.
