  • Reports of a ship catching fire on the Caithness coast.
  • A meteor shower is believed to be the reason behind it.

Thursday night was an unusual affair for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency of Scotland. There were reports of a ship catching fire off  the Lybster near Caithness coast, while it was circling the coast. A meteor shower was suspected to be the reason behind it.

An MCA spokeswoman said, “The Quadrantids were at their peak with characteristics that could include bright fireball effects so we believe that this may have looked like a vessel of fire to the person that originally reported the incident.”

When the police instructed the MCA to investigate on this matter further, they contacted the crew members and found that no such incident occurred. All vessels were found safe and sound.
