The European Maritime Simulator Network EMSN aims at improving the exchange of information and route guidance in maritime transport and at reducing waiting times in ports.
This network enables testing of Sea Traffic Management in complex traffic situations and port approaches. For the next simulation runs we are looking for captains, pilots and ship officers. Join fellow bridge officers in making the seas a safer place! Simulations across the network help validate new services and functions that will give mariners a broader picture and better decision support.
Take one day either February 6-9 or March 13-16 and take charge of a bridge in Hamburg! The registration site is here
One of the participants of the simulations in November 2017, Georgios Georgopoulos, chief officer at Blue Star Ferries, shares his thoughts. “I am interested in new technology related to my profession and want to be a part of the future so therefore I applied to participate in test runs of the European Maritime Simulator Network EMSN. I had just signed off my shift on board and travelled directly to Sweden. It has been a good experience to participate and get a picture of another part of the industry. This first exercise was fairly easy, but the second one more complicated due to the amount of traffic. 28 ships participated in the exercise, which made it really realistic!”
The baseline simulations gather data about the interaction, behaviour and stress level of the participating personnel, and the gathered data will be compared with future scenarios including STM services to evaluate what impact such services have on safety and behaviour. One more baseline scenario week will be held in February, followed by another week of exercises with the new STM services in March.
The STM test beds will include 300 ships, 13 ports and 5 shore centres and EMSN.
