Vessel Allides with Pier in Genoa

On February 14, a ferry reportedly allided with a Colombo pier located at Genoa due to incorrect berthing operations.

What happened?

The ferry ‘Sharden’ was expected to arrive from Porto Torres to Genoa when it allided with Colombo pier at Genoa due to an incorrect berthing manoeuvre.

Due to the allision, the hull was breached on several meters at the port side near the waterline. The passengers were disembarked the usual way once the ferry was berthed. Fortunately, none of the passengers were injured during the allision.

Towed for repairs

The port authorities were notified about the incident by Tirrenia Company. The ferry was immediately taken in for repairs and will be berthed until deemed worthy. Another ferry ‘Janas’ was called in as a replacement ferry and started the Genoa-Porto Torres line in the evening of February 15.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the damages sustained by the pier due to the impact and divers have been called to assess the damage.
