Over the weekend, a greek owner was ordered to pay $166,000 as pay arrears to crew members over non-payment of salary.

What happened?

In a case of neglect, the Ukrainian crew members of car carrier ‘Sea Patris’ were detained by Port State Control in Belgium for non-payment of wages and SOLAS issues, with the crew reportedly having not been paid since October last year.

Violation of SOLAS

The detained ship was allowed to set sail after the Greek shipping owner Mediterranean Car Carriers Line (MCCL) made a payment of $166,000 in late wage payments to the vessel’s 23 crew members.

ITF inspector Christian Roos, who claimed MCCL had a history of crew neglect said, “Failure to pay salaries on time is a serious violation of national and international laws and is a form of social dumping and unfair competition”.
