A cargo ship has reportedly lost 70 out of 30,000 containers at Sea off North Carolina’s Outer Banks due to strong winds and rough waves.
What happened?
The vessel ‘Maersk Shanghai’ lost its container at Sea off North Carolina’s Outer Banks due to adverse weather conditions with 65-mph storm winds and waves up to 30 feet tall.
According to the company, among the containers which were lost at Sea, was a container which contains 6,000 pounds of sulfuric acid, a chemical commonly used to produce fertilizers.
Minimal threat
The Coast Guard spokesman Ronald Hodges said, “Experts in saying the environmental threat appeared minimal because sulfuric acid dissolves in saltwater”.
The vessel is currently anchored in Charleston, South Carolina, where officials were assessing the situation. The Coast Guard has conveyed that it had found four of the containers floating offshore.
