On April 10, a fire broke out in an abandoned cargo vessel currently being dismantled in Beauharnois.

What happened?

Since 2011, the abandoned cargo vessel ‘The Kathryn Spirit’ was docked on the St. Lawrence River and from January 2018 the vessel was in the process of being dismantled.

However, on tuesday a plume of smoke was seen emanating from the dismantled cargo vessel and the firefighters were called in to contain the fire.

The fire is suspected to have originated from a spark. The cutting tools might have ignited some of those soaked materials in the ship’s engine room.

Fire extinguished

The firefighters from Beauharnois and Chateauguay were called to put out the fire, while officials from the Public Safety Ministry were also dispatched to scene of the incident.

The fire chief from said, “All flammable liquids were removed long ago, but that some liquids had been absorbed by materials such as insulation”.

Even after several hours had passed after the fire broke out it was still too hot for firefighters to approach the room where the fire was burning, but crews were preparing to pump foam into the room and extinguish the flames.

Finally, they were successful in containing the fire by pumping foam into the engine room to extinguish the fire. Experts from Environment Canada and Environment Quebec were on site to collect and analyze air samples as a precautionary measure.
