1847

On May 21, a viral video of a freighter heading toward the Port Huron boardwalk has been doing rounds and the shipping company has come forward with an explanation.

What happened?

The freighter ‘Jana Desgagnes’ was filmed coming close to the seawall along the Thomas Edison Parkway under the Blue Water Bridge. This incident was filmed by a fisherman who was present in the vicinity.

The vessel was carrying clean refined oil and heading to Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The incident is said to have occurred when the pilot was aboard the vessel when an incorrect command was given out to go to port when it should have been starboard. The Captain was quick to respond and averted the accident within seconds.

NOTE: The video contains strong language.

Company provides explanation

Brian Ritchie, president of Rigel Shipping said, “The fisherman who captured a freighter heading toward the Port Huron boardwalk wasn’t the only one rather excited Monday night. The crew on board were excited”.

Ritchie said the captain of the vessel has provided the ship managing company with a full report.
