Cosco Shipping to Test Mitsubishi Scrubber

2569

The COSCO shipping company is gearing up it vessel to host a pilot installation of a new scrubber technology developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

Makes use of limited space

The rectangular funnel known as ‘Active Funnel’ scrubber is designed to be used for ease of installation on vessels with a short of space.

The Active Funnel is easy to retrofit and is available in either open-loop or hybrid configurations. The product range will be extended to enable even more power-hungry vessels, including very large crude carriers and ore carriers.

Moreover, the system is suitable for very large container ships with high exhaust gas emissions, where it can be installed in narrow spaces between the container holds, maintaining the vessel’s cargo capacity.

Emission control

The scrubber system is designed in such a way that it cleans emissions from 3.5% sulphur heavy fuel oil to below the 0.5% sulphur cap to be introduced in 2020 and the 0.1% limit demanded in emission control areas.

The technology has been developed in partnership between MHI’s shipbuilding division and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, which has built several desulphurisation systems for thermal power plants. These facilities are capable of producing seven to twenty times the exhaust gas of large marine engines.
