1384

On June 17, a freighter ran aground and nearly collided with city’s break wall.

What happened?

The 1,004-foot freighter ‘M/V American Spirit’ when it ran aground nearly hit Duluth’s break wall on Sunday. The vessel grounded about 50 feet from the wall near the Aerial Lift Bridge.

The ship is said to have stopped about 50 feet short of the wall while successfully avoiding a full on collision with the wall.

Stormy weather plays havoc

The vessel is reported to have grounded due to strong winds and heavy rains at the time, but the cause of the incident is under investigation.

Though the vessel ran around, no oil leaks were reported and the  U.S. Coast Guard has set up a 500-yard safety zone around the ship but a major tug operation has to be initiated to get the ship out of the harbor.
