On June 23, a vessel belonging to the container shipping shipping Danish Maersk Line was instrumental in rescuing 113 migrants off the coast of southern Italy.

What happened?

The container ship ‘Alexander Maersk’ changed its course after it received a stress signal.

The vessel rushed to the spot and rescued 113 migrants off the coast of Southern Italy.

Awaiting instructions

After rescuing 113 immigrants from the Sea, the vessel is currently situated off the coast of the Sicilian town of Pozzallo and awaiting instructions from the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Rome).

Maersk’s conduct appreciated

This rescue move by Maersk has been highly appreciated and rescuing migrants is part of “an ancient code of conduct”.

Moreover, this is not the first time they have picked up migrants and have rescued them two or three times before in recent years.

Italy’s stance

The new populist government in Italy has threatened to seize several other ships carrying migrants, sparking a row with the EU.
