Three Port Workers Died Poisoned by Gas in Cargo Hold

On July 24, three port workers died and one worker was hospitalized after they inhaled toxic gas in a cargo hold.

What happened?

The vessel ‘Sepetiba Bay’ was docked at the Portocel port for unloading wood. The wood was stored in the cargo hold of the vessel and was treated for protection with gas to destroy termites.

Workers inhale toxic fume

One port worker who was tasked with unloading the cargo ventured in the cargo hold of the vessel and lost consciousness after inhaling the toxic fumes. On seeing their colleague collapse, the other three tried to help him, but were also poisoned.

One of them managed to climb back onto cargo deck, though badly intoxicated was rescued by the port officials and rushed to the hospital.
