Ferry Catches Fire Off Cebu Port

On September 2, a ferry carrying over hundred people caught fire near the Port of Taloot in Argao, Cebu.

What happened?

The ferry ‘MV Lite Ferry 28’ was enroute from Tagbilaran to Argao port when it caught fire near the Port of Taloot. The fire is reported to have originated from the ferry’s engine room. Around 92 passengers and 28 crew members were onboard the vessel when the incident occurred.

Passengers and crew rescued

The Philippine Coast Guard(PCG) were notified about the incident and they dispatched the cargo ship ‘LCT Miami’ which rescued 120 people from the ferry. The rescued were reported to be in good condition with no major injuries.


The Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP ‘Capones’ as well as ‘MCS 3007’ of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources also helped in putting out the fire.

The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) said, “The blaze was immediately put out and the ferry was towed to shore at 12:45 pm. The blaze is reported to have originated from the ferry’s engine room”.

Investigation launched

An investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the fire and the vessel is currently anchored at the Argao port to carry out further repairs.
