Maersk Container Ship Reported Arrested

A container ship belonging to Maersk is reported to have been placed under arrest in Tunisia. The container ship was praised for giving asylum to 113 refugees earlier this year.

What happened?

The container ship ‘Alexander Maersk’ belonging to the AP Moller-Maersk Group and flying under the Denmark flag has reportedly been placed under in Sfax, Tunisia.

The reason for the vessel being arrested is unknown as it has called upon Sfax twice, first call in August also being unusually long, lasting 9 days.

Refugee incident

Earlier at June this year, the vessel was en route from Malta to Libya when it gave asylum to 113 refugees with the support of its lifeboat ‘Lifeline’, the vessel was requested by Italian Coast Guard to rescue the refugees after their boat capsized. The ship after waiting a few days before Pozzallo, Sicily seeking permission to dock in an Italian port, the Italian government finally gave it.

Reason for arrest unclear

The reason for the vessel being placed under is unknown as of now and officials are trying to ascertain the reason for the same.
