On October 31, a passenger ferry collided with a loading crane due to bad weather at the Barcelona port.

What happened?

The Grandi Navi Veloci owned ferry was preparing to dock at the port but was unable to so due to strong winds and sea currents. Due to the adverse weather conditions, the ferry collided with the crane. The ferry was loaded with passengers and vehicles when the incident occurred.

Collision sparks fire

The collision with the crane resulted in flames coming from four containers that fell from the ship. The fire was tackled with foam because some of them contained hazardous chemicals. An alert for dangerous chemicals was issued and the city’s firefighters put out the fire hours after the ship crashed.

None injured

No injury was reported during the incident. A spokeswoman, who wasn’t authorized to be identified by name in media reports, said a dozen firefighting vehicles and several ambulances had been dispatched to the port.

The civil protection department also activated an alert for possible sea pollution.
