Post-Panamax Vessel’s Cargo on Fire!

On January 31, a fire erupted on the cargo deck of a containership off South China and has reportedly been brought under control.

What happened?

The containership ‘APL Vancouver’ was enroute from Shenzhen to Singapore when a fire erupted onboard the cargo deck of the vessel. The containers stored on the deck caught fire when the vessel was sailing to small Vung Ro Bay in Phu Yen Province.

Search and Rescue dispatched

The Vietnamese Coast Guard was alerted and they dispatched SAR ship ‘CSB 8005’ to assist the vessel and its crew members. The cause of the fire remains unknown and the crew members onboard the vessel were reported to be safe and most of them have been rescued.

The SAR tugs deployed by the vessel moved south, from Vung Ro Bay to Phan Rang Bay, Ninh Thuan Province, because of deteriorated weather and some other considerations.

Fire under control

Initially, crew members and the Vietnamese Coast Guard were successful in subduing the fire but it erupted again on February 2. A Salvage team comprising of 11 experts team is already on site monitoring the situation. There are 4515 containers on board, 134 of them contain flammable and toxic goods.
