 What happened?

The LPG carrier Syn Zania was anchored at a harbor at the Petkim petrochemical plant operated by the Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR facility in the port of Aliaga.

A fire broke out due to an unspecified reason during the connection to the Syn Zania for the filling of liquid hydrocarbons, said Petkim in a statement.

There were 17 crew members onboard at the time of the incident, including 15 Italians, 1 Romanian national and 1 Petkim worker.

Crew members aboard the vessel suffered injuries during the explosion and had to be hospitalized where one of the hospitalized seafarers succumbed to his injuries.

The 11-year-old ship, owned by Naples-based Synergas, was badly damaged in the fire. The full extent of the damage or the reason behind the explosion is still not known. An investigation into the accident is set to be launched.
