According to an article published in Yle, Meyer Turku Shipyard has signed an agreement to build a third Icon class cruise ship for Royal Caribbean Cruises.
The new ship will run on liquefied natural gas and is expected to be delivered in 2025.
Construction of the 200,000 gross tonnage cruise ship
In-spite of the deal being subject to financing, Meyer Turku said construction of the 200,000 gross tonnage cruise ship will begin in spring 2020.
The estimated price tag of the deal was not disclosed.
Cruisers powered by LNG
Icon ships are among the first generation of massive sea cruisers to be fully powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
LNG can cut greenhouse gas emissions by one fifth compared to heavy fuel oil.
Icon-class ships for Royal Caribbean Cruises
Meyer Turku sealed a deal to build the first two Icon-class ships for Royal Caribbean Cruises in 2017. Those vessels are scheduled to be delivered in 2022 and 2024.
Royal Caribbean Cruises Chairman and CEO, Richard Fain, said the company strives to introduce clean power technologies at sea.
Environmentally-friendly applications
He added that they have come up with a class of ships powered by liquefied natural gas that leverages the latest, environmentally-friendly applications.
He believes that innovative shipbuilding can build a cleaner future by-

- Boosting energy efficiencies
Jan Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku, thanked Royal Caribbean for the confidence in their company, even before the first Icon ships have been delivered.
Icon III for better future
“Icon III further extends our order book until 2025, which gives the shipyard and the Finnish maritime cluster a long term stability, which we need to further develop our capabilities for a future with new emerging and often government owned competition,” Meyer said in a company statement on Tuesday.
