- K Line and Namura Shipbuilding have upgraded a version of the ore carrier Wozmax to LNG-fuelled.
- The new concept design of the LNG-powered ore carrier is based on the second generation Wozmax of Namura Shipyard.
- Apart from LNG conversion, it was optimised further to reduce CO2 emissions and reduction of fuel oil consumption.
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Namura Shipbuilding have upgraded a version of the ore carrier Wozmax to LNG-fuelled, and obtained a joint approval-in-principle (AIP) for the concept design from DNV GL, reports Seatrade Maritime News.
Second generation Wozmax
The new concept design of the LNG-powered ore carrier is based on the second generation Wozmax of Namura Shipyard.
The latest version of Wozmax will maintain the same 250,000 dwt with service speed of 14.3 knots.
Energy Efficiency Design Index
But its LNG fuel tanks will be arranged in the center section of the hull in order to give the vessel sufficient endurance for a round-trip between Singapore and Brazil in gas fuel mode.
The new Wozmax will also achieve Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) phase three by means of primary fuel change to LNG.
Reduced carbon emissions and fuel consumption
K Line stated that, in addition to LNG fuel conversion, the possibility of it being combined with shaft generator, binary cycle power generation system and lithium battery was also studied.
This was carried out to further reduce CO2 emissions and to confirm that the system can achieve an additional further 4% reduction of fuel oil consumption.
The Wozmax, a registered brand of Namura Shipyard, is an optimum size of vessel that can call at main West Australian iron ore loading ports, which stands for ‘West’, ‘Oz’, and ‘Max’.
