According to an article published by NBC2, a tugboat belonging to Bourbon Offshore sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
What happened?
On September 27, the French corporation Bourbon Offshore confirmed that their ship Bourbon Rhode sank sometime on Thursday as it tried to navigate through Hurricane Lorenzo.
The Bourbon Rhode is a tugboat used to supply and move around oil drilling platforms and rigs. At 162 feet long and 1525 U.S. tons, this is by no means a small vessel.
Fourteen people missing
Reporting by The Weather Channel indicates that the ship was close to the eye of Lorenzo when it went down.
Fourteen people were on the Bourbon Rhode. On Saturday Bourbon Offshore confirmed that the French Navy rescued three of the crew in a life raft. The search for the remaining 11 crew is ongoing.
Aircraft dispatched to track locate tugboat
In the early stages of the search for the ship, a nearby hurricane hunter mission was diverted to help. The track for aircraft NOAA 43 “Miss Piggy“ on Friday’s mission shows the search pattern.
The Bourbon Rhode is now one of three ships that have been lost in Atlantic hurricanes this decade. On October 29, 2012, the sailing ship Bounty sank off the coast of North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy. The cargo ship El Faro sank on October 1st, 2015 after trying to sail through Hurricane Joaquin. All 33 members of the crew of the El Faro were killed.
