The newly identified Coronavirus has made world headlines given its rapid spread and as the number of infected or dead people keeps on increasing.

Key principles from WHO
WHO notes that the key principles on reducing the risk of transmission:
- Avoiding close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections.
- Frequent hand washing, especially after direct contact with ill people or their environment.
- Avoiding unprotected contact with farm or wild animals.
- People with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, and wash hands.
The digital tools
The two new digital tools have been launched to inform and track the situation, after the World Health Organization declared a global emergency.
First of all, the official site provides real-time numbers on Coronavirus, in addition to the countries that have reported infection incidents and cases where people have been deceased.
How will the application work?
The application provides the opportunity to the viewer to choose to see the results separately.
In other words, the viewer can see the countries that people have been infected in, or they can see in which countries affected people have lost their lives, followed by numbers.
North P&I Club’s “MyGlobeView”
In addition, North P&I Club announced the launch of its own application, that will help shipowners and operators track the spread of the Coronavirus outbreak.
An interactive map
The platform is called “MyGlobeView” and is an interactive map that North members can use to identify any commercial risks and physical threat to the shipping industry on a global scale.
Therefore, the platform provides live updates concerning the number of confirmed cases of the virus, countries at risk and what to look out for.
How does the application get its data?
The Club adds that the application acquires its data from the World Health Organization and other leading sources.
Simon MacLeod, North deputy director – loss prevention commented that
“We are committed to ensuring that our ship owner members have easy access to up-to-date advice and guidance to operate safely. So, we take outbreaks like the Coronavirus very seriously and have acted quickly to release this latest update to our MyGlobeView platform.”

He added that except WHO, the platform adds sources from John Hopkins University. The latter launched a live interactive map, monitoring and tracking the spreading of the coronavirus and providing numbers and details on people infected, deceased ones or recovered cases.
