Freighters have been in the game for quite a lot of time. However, they were worth quite a lot of money which made it quite impossible for many people to get them. However, one of the new things in the NEXT update is that you can get Freighters quite easily, and this No Man’s Sky NEXT Freighter Guide will tell you how.
No Man’s Sky Next changes dramatically when you acquire your first freighter. Before you have a freighter, your Starship is your home while your base is anchored to a planet you may visit from time to time. You’re essentially a nomad with space stations serving as pit stops in the star systems you visit.
All of this changes when you have a freighter.
Range of cargo slot capacity
Freighters are intergalactic ships with a lot of inventory space. Regular freighters have 15 to 19 cargo slots while capital freighters have 24 to 48. However, the number of slots doesn’t tell the whole story.
Each slot in a freighter holds twice as much as a slot for the same type of item in a Starship. For example, freighter slots hold 1000 elements which is twice the capacity of a Starship slot and four times the capacity of an Exosuit slot.
Larger the capacity Easier the solution
Freighters’ large storage capacities mean they provide an easy solution for the problem of having to empty your Starship or Multi-tool before you trade it in for a new model.
You must be on a freighter to transfer items from its hold, but items can be stored in the freighter from anywhere. When you’re ready for a trade-in, transfer everything you want to keep to the freighter, make the trade, boost into space, call your freighter and transfer everything back. Easy peasy.
Trading is easy but Upgrading???
Freighters make trading up for better Starships and Multi-tools easy but upgrading to a better freighter can be a problem. Everything in your current freighter is lost when you acquire a new one.
Finding enough temporary storage space to accommodate everything stored in a freighter’s large-capacity slots is difficult and hard choices about what to keep will almost certainly have to be made.
Freighters might look like nothing more than No Man’s Sky Next’s version of a U-Haul self-storage unit but enhanced storage is just the beginning of the story. For starters, freighters are mobile bases that allow you to build base structures on your ship. Specialist and Galactic Trade Terminals can be built on your freighter and you can devote a room to your portable devices for convenience sake.
Just a press to call freighter
Speaking of convenience, you don’t have to go to your freighter, it will come to you when you call. If you’re on a planet, the freighter will arrive a little outside the planet’s atmosphere above you. If you’re in a Starship, it will arrive right next to you. It doesn’t matter where you left the freighter or where you are, the freighter will instantly warp to your location.
Pressing down on the D-pad brings up the command to call your freighter.
A hub for a fleet of frigates
Freighters come pre-equipped with several terminals that are located below the glowing orb on the freighter’s bridge. The Galactic Commission Station has a selection of missions and the Freighter warp map lets you pilot the freighter to other star systems just as you do your Starship.
A freighter’s landing bay holds six ships, so if you own more than one, you can bring them all along when you move to a different star system by loading them into your freighter.
The most interesting feature of freighters for many players is that they serve as the hub for a fleet of Frigates. Frigates can be sent on expeditions to different star systems to explore, trade, carry out industrial operations and more. Frigates open up new ways to play and are deserving of a guide of their own.
How to own one?
Okay, so freighters are great for any number of reasons. How do you get one? The thunderous booming heard out in space are freighters warping into the star system. If a freighter is marked with a purple icon, you can board it and the captain will offer to sell it to you. They are prohibitively expensive, however, and there are two better options.
The first option is saving a freighter from a common pirate attack. These attacks happen relatively frequently, and you can choose to participate or not. If you get involved and save the freighter, the captain will invite you aboard and offer to sell you the freighter at a discount. It’s cheaper, but it’s still not cheap.
The second option is the best by far. On rare occasions, a space battle between a large pirate fleet and a capital freighter breaks out the moment you warp into a system. The captain will send you a transmission asking for help. If you don’t have a freighter, help him out. Fire on the pirates and they will attack you in teams of two. Once you’ve defeated them all, the captain will invite you onto his ship and offer to give you the freighter for free. The smallest capital freighters typically cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 170 million units. Getting one for free is a sweet deal. These epic freighter battles don’t happen often, but one is scripted to occur relatively early in the game.
Freighters new solutions
Freighters offer new solutions to old problems and open up new ways to play No Man’s Sky Next. If you’ve been living the nomad’s life in your Starship with occasional visits to space stations and your planetary base, a freighter will give you a home that’s flexible, adaptable, offers new levels of convenience, and follows you wherever you go.
Get that free capital freighter when the opportunity arises.

Highly descriptive post, I loved that a lot. Will there be a part 2?
