- Last year is destined to go down as a record year for activity in the tanker sale and purchase (S&P) market with the first two weeks of 2021 seeing 48 tankers reported sold.
- So far, 2022 has been more modest, with 11 tankers changing hands.
- The largest was 2008-built, 310,400-dwt Tsushima, a VLCC tanker constructed at Mitsui Ichihara, a shipyard better known for producing medium-sized dry bulk carriers.
A recent news article published in the Riviera by Craig Jallal states Tanker sale and purchase activity 2022: weeks 1 and 2.
Tsushima is the youngest VLCC
Tsushima is the youngest VLCC built at Mitsui Ichihara to be sold out of Japanese hands. The VLCC has just passed a special survey and was sold for a reported US$36.4M to an unknown Greek owner.
The VLCC is reported to be fitted with a ballast water treatment system (BWMS).
Sold for a similar price was the slightly younger 2009-built, 296,100-dwt VLCC tanker New Talisman, which was reported sold for US$36M, with the last special survey passed September 2019, to Aeolos Management of Greece, run by the Embiricos family. New Talisman is also reported to be fitted with a BWMS.
Details of the oldest vessel
The oldest vessel of the 11 reported sold in the first two weeks of 2022 was 2004-built, 75,000-dwt LR1 product tanker Torm Emilie, which was reported sold for US$13.5M. Torm Emilie is reported to be fitted with a BWMS.
Concordia Maritime said it has entered into a contract for the sale of P-MAX vessel 2007-built, 65,000-dwt Stena Perros. The buyer is an oil company with operations in Africa and delivery is scheduled for the end of January. Stena Perros is due to have its scheduled five-year special survey in Q4 2022.
Continued weak tanker market
Concordia Maritime’s new chief executive Erik Lewenhaupt said of the sale, “Despite existing charter agreements, the continued weak tanker market poses challenges for Concordia Maritime. The sale of Stena Perros is aimed at improving the company’s financial position and is in line with the bank agreement signed in Q3 2021. Further sales cannot be ruled out in the future unless we see a rapid recovery in the tanker transport market”, he said.
According to vessel databases, Stena Perros is not fitted with a BWMS.
