A Strategic Investment for Sweden’s Growing Transportation Needs

The Arendal 2 terminal, a significant investment of approximately 60 million EUR, has been under construction for six years. This project was initiated to address the increasing transportation demands of the Swedish industry, which are expected to continue rising. According to Göran Eriksson, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg, the planning for this terminal began as early as the 1990s with the intention of future-proofing the port’s capabilities. Now, as those anticipated needs have become a reality, Arendal 2 is vital for supporting the ongoing growth of Swedish industry.

Environmental Management and Construction Process

A crucial aspect of the Arendal 2 terminal’s construction involved the innovative handling of 180,000 cubic meters of contaminated materials dredged from the Göta River. These materials were carefully encapsulated, stabilized, and solidified to form the foundation of the terminal area, which was then asphalted. This environmentally responsible approach ensured that the construction process aligned with sustainable practices while providing a solid base for the new terminal.

Strategic Location and Operational Benefits

Arendal 2 is part of the Port of Gothenburg’s broader strategy to centralize terminal operations in the outer port area, further from the city center. This location offers direct connections to the port’s road and rail infrastructure and is strategically positioned near a growing industrial cluster. The Gothenburg Roro Terminal, the operator of Arendal 2, has already begun using large sections of the new terminal. Previously, the operator’s activities were spread across two adjacent areas, but with Arendal 2, they now benefit from a larger, more contiguous area with improved access to key berths 712 and 713. This consolidation enhances operational efficiency and supports the port’s long-term strategic goals.
