ABB and eMarine Collaborate to Bring Non-Invasive Temperature Sensing to the Marine Sector

8

ABB is supplying 1,500 of its NINVA non-invasive temperature sensors to eMarine, a Swedish company focused on energy efficiency in the maritime industry. This collaboration marks the first time ABB’s NINVA technology is being used in the global marine sector. The sensors will be integrated into eMarine’s existing energy management systems on large cruise and cargo ships.

Benefits and Applications

The primary purpose of the NINVA sensors is to collect data that helps optimize onboard systems, including heat recovery, cooling water, and ventilation. By providing these insights, the technology aims to help vessels reduce fuel consumption, save energy, and lower CO₂ emissions. The sensors are specifically designed to be durable for marine environments, with enhanced vibration resistance.

Innovative Design and Safety

The NINVA technology offers a significant shift from traditional methods by being non-invasive. Instead of requiring a thermowell to be inserted into a pipe, the sensors clamp onto the outside of the pipe. This eliminates the need to perforate pipe walls, which in turn removes the risk of potential leaks. The technology uses the pipe’s surface temperature to accurately measure the process temperature inside, offering the same performance as invasive devices without the associated risks.
