  • ABB and CMA CGM Group are collaborating on a new parametric roll algorithm to improve ship safety.
  • The solution integrates a theoretical framework developed by CMA CGM into the ABB Ability™ OCTOPUS Marine Advisory system.

CMA CGM and ABB have partnered to develop a parametric roll algorithm aimed at improving ship safety, integrating a CMA CGM theoretical framework with ABB’s OCTOPUS Marine Advisory system to detect and mitigate risk, reports and ABB release.

New parametric roll algorithm

Parametric roll, a phenomenon caused by wave-hull interactions, particularly affects container ships, ro-pax vessels, and car carriers. The new algorithm is designed to improve operational safety by providing real-time monitoring and response.

CMA CGM will deploy the system across its fleet and provide training for crew members, with courses also available for the wider industry. ABB will manage system installation, engineering, project management, and commissioning for the project.

We are excited to collaborate with ABB on this parametric roll algorithm, a groundbreaking integration of the CMA CGM theoretical framework with the ABB Ability OCTOPUS Marine Advisory system,” said Emmanuel Delran, Vice President Group Operations, CMA CGM Group.

This solution not only enhances safety and operational efficiency but also helps to minimize risks for cargo damage and loss at sea. This collaboration represents a major leap forward for the industry, enabling more efficient operations and safer voyages.”

CMA CGM already has approximately 200 vessels equipped with ABB’s OCTOPUS system.
