ABB Supports DEME’s Fleet Decarbonization With Shore Connection Technology

185

  • In a significant development for maritime sustainability, ABB has secured a contract to deliver shoreside shore connection installations for DEME’s fleet in the Port of Vlissingen, Netherlands.
  • This initiative aims to enable the avoidance of emissions during berthing, aligning with DEME’s ambitious goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet by 40% by 2030 compared to 2008.
  • The collaboration reinforces ABB’s leading position globally as a provider of plug-and-play shore power systems for ships.

Background

The project is part of a broader strategy by DEME to integrate sustainable business goals with daily operations. DEME has demonstrated its commitment to CO2 reductions and environmental stewardship by achieving the highest level of the CO₂ performance ladder, an accolade widely recognized in the Netherlands and Belgium. ABB’s shore connection technology, awarded after a private tender process, is designed to meet DEME’s decarbonization objectives while aligning with local interests and infrastructure capabilities.

Initiative Details

The solution provided by ABB comprises shoreside shore connection installations that will connect to suitably equipped vessels calling at Vlissingen’s DEME base by the end of 2024. This initiative is part of the “Temporary Shore Power Grant Scheme for Marine Vessels 2022 – 2023,” a government-supported program stimulating the construction and use of shore power facilities in Dutch seaports. It is noteworthy that connecting to shore power while at berth is expected to become mandatory at main EU ports listed in the trans-European transport network from 2030, under FuelEU Maritime regulations.

Technical Specifications

ABB’s expertise in shore connection technology ensures almost any type of vessel can reduce emissions by connecting to shore power at the quay. The solution, housed in two ISO containers, offers flexibility with a planned 2MvA converter, initially operating at 1.75MvA until the local grid capacity increases. ABB’s track record in shipside shore connection solutions dates back to 2000, demonstrating its leadership and experience in this field.

ABB’s collaboration with DEME represents a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization efforts. By providing innovative shore connection technology, ABB contributes to the reduction of emissions and the advancement of sustainable operations in the maritime industry. As ports and shipping companies worldwide strive to meet stringent environmental regulations, ABB’s solutions play a crucial role in facilitating sustainable operations and driving industry-wide decarbonization.
