  • ABB will supply its advanced Azipod® DI propulsion system for China’s new polar research icebreaker, enhancing capabilities for Arctic and Antarctic exploration.
  • The Azipod® system meets strict environmental standards with ‘SILENT A’ notation, reducing underwater noise emissions and ecological impact.
  • ABB’s enduring partnership with Guangzhou Shipyard International strengthens their commitment to innovation in polar exploration technology.

ABB’s Key Role in Polar Exploration

In a significant development for polar exploration, ABB has secured an order to supply its state-of-the-art Azipod® DI propulsion system for the new icebreaker of China’s Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering. This collaboration is poised to elevate China’s capabilities in conducting research in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Cutting-Edge

The new compact icebreaker will be equipped with a complete electric propulsion system, featuring two powerful 4.5 MW Azipod® units. These cutting-edge propulsion units are designed to navigate harsh weather conditions and thick first-year ice, facilitating groundbreaking research missions. With a maximum speed of 16 knots and impressive icebreaking capacity, this vessel is set to redefine polar exploration.

Setting Environmental Standards

Environmental sustainability takes center stage with the vessel’s ‘SILENT A’ notation. ABB’s Azipod® electric propulsion system aligns seamlessly with this notation, focusing on reducing underwater noise emissions, especially in acoustically sensitive environments. ABB’s technology not only meets stringent noise criteria but also minimizes ecological impact, emphasizing the commitment to environmentally responsible exploration.

A Pioneering Partnership

This project marks a milestone in ABB’s enduring collaboration with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI). A trusted partner for polar-class vessels, GSI recognizes the reliability and technological prowess that ABB brings to the table. As ABB Marine & Ports celebrates two decades of local presence in China, this partnership underscores the dedication to meeting regional requirements and driving innovation in polar exploration.
