ABB has won its first order from COSCO Shipping, China’s largest shipping company, for permanent magnet shaft generator systems to be installed on 10 containerships, reports Bunkerspot.

About the system

The systems will be installed at the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) shipyards. Scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025, the order comprises systems for six 14,000 TEU vessels and four 16,000 TEU vessels.

According to ABB, compared with traditional, single unit diesel generator sets, the permanent magnet shaft generator system will facilitate fuel savings of up to 17%. The company also says that the permanent magnet shaft generators will help the COSCO vessels achieve required efficiency levels as well as Carbon Intensity Index (CII) ratings which verify reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Michael Christensen, Global Segment Manager Dry Cargo, ABB Marine & Ports, commented ‘ABB has been supporting China’s maritime industry for almost two decades, and we are proud to collaborate with COSCO Shipping, the country’s largest shipping company, in this breakthrough project.

‘As we continue to develop our local capabilities to better serve our customers and help them achieve their sustainability targets, our permanent magnet technology will have an important role to play.’
