In a major move to redefine maritime education, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has announced its acquisition of the MetaSHIP intellectual property and vessel simulator software from Orka Informatics. The purchase, which awaits approval from Turkish authorities, marks a pivotal step in ABS’s strategy to expand its advanced training solutions worldwide.
Transforming Maritime Learning Through Digital Innovation
The acquisition will significantly enhance ABS Training Solutions by integrating MetaSHIP’s virtual vessel simulation software into its global training framework. This technology enables immersive, game-based learning experiences that can be delivered on board ships, in ports, or remotely. With existing high-tech learning centers in Qatar, Greece, and Singapore, ABS aims to train the global maritime workforce in real-world scenarios without the need for physical vessel access.
ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki emphasized the critical importance of investing in advanced digital training, stating that the maritime industry must prepare seafarers to manage hybrid systems, navigate evolving safety standards, and meet regulatory changes.
The MetaSHIP Platform: Gamifying Competence and Safety
MetaSHIP’s interactive platform breaks down complex ship operations into engaging visual lessons. The system features a virtual maritime universe with vessels, ports, and waterways, allowing users to practice operations in realistic scenarios. It also includes the ODENES platform, which tracks training progress, and Navigational Skill and Behavioral Assessment, a simulation tool designed to evaluate and enhance seafarer performance.
According to Levent Şen, the creator of MetaSHIP, the platform was designed to make maritime education accessible and immersive. Under ABS’s leadership, it will now reach seafarers globally, strengthening the industry’s overall competence and safety.
Strengthening Leadership for Global Training Expansion
To lead this new phase, ABS has appointed Campbell Smith as Senior Vice President of ABS Training Solutions. Smith brings extensive maritime leadership experience from Maersk Training and holds advanced degrees in marketing and international business from INSEAD University and Auckland University of Technology. His role will focus on expanding ABS’s immersive training offerings and addressing the maritime industry’s growing skills gap.
With the acquisition of MetaSHIP, ABS is positioning itself at the forefront of maritime education innovation. By combining advanced simulation technology, data-driven learning platforms, and global expertise, ABS aims to close the maritime skills gap and enhance operational safety and efficiency across the sector. The integration of game-based learning tools represents a new era in seafarer training immersive, accessible, and aligned with the industry’s digital future.
