ABS And HD Hyundai Mipo Launch Joint Project To Revolutionize Shipyard Automation

14

In a move set to transform modern shipbuilding, ABS and HD Hyundai Mipo (HMD) have entered into a Joint Development Project (JDP) aimed at integrating digital manufacturing technologies into shipyard operations. This collaboration focuses on deploying artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and smart communication systems to improve efficiency, safety, and quality in ship construction.

Harnessing Smart Technologies for Efficient Shipbuilding

At the core of this JDP is the application of ABS’s Guide for Smart Technologies for Shipyards, which will help HMD identify and implement advanced solutions across its shipyard facilities. These include hyper-connectivity, data-driven intelligence, and automation tools such as augmented and virtual reality, AI-based simulations, digital twins, and robotic systems. The objective is to streamline manufacturing processes, reduce errors, and boost innovation—marking a shift toward the era of smart shipyards.

Setting Global Standards and Enhancing Industry Collaboration

This partnership also aims to establish digital manufacturing as a global standard by enabling objective evaluation from classification bodies like ABS. Through the JDP, there is potential for certifications such as Product Design Assessment and Manufacturing Assessment, provided criteria are met. Both ABS and HMD foresee that this collaboration will enhance shipyard procedures, make surveys more efficient, and ultimately benefit shipowners, builders, and the broader maritime industry.
