ABS and IMODCO Partner on Jetty-less Ammonia Transfer Solutions at Gastech 2024

  • ABS and IMODCO Terminals met at Gastech 2024, where ABS approved several jetty-less terminal concepts for large-volume ammonia transfers.
  • IMODCO’s jetty-less systems reduce the risk of ammonia leaks by moving transfers offshore via subsea pipelines.
  • Both companies commit to support safe energy transitions for the marine and offshore industries.

At Gastech 2024, ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) and IMODCO Terminals SA, a division of SBM Offshore, announced their collaboration to move frequent, large-volume ammonia transfers offshore. ABS issued approvals in principle (AIPs) for a range of jetty-less New Energy Terminal designs developed by IMODCO, reports ABS.

Jetty-less Systems for Ammonia Transfers

IMODCO is leveraging its proven jetty-less system, originally used for moving crude oil, to support ammonia transfers.

This innovation helps mitigate risks by moving the ammonia transfers offshore, reducing the potential for leaks in populated coastal areas.

ABS Reviews IMODCO’s Key Technologies

ABS reviewed the designs of IMODCO’s Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring (CALM) buoy, CALM soft yoke, and Tower Loading Unit (TLU).

These technologies enable ammonia carriers to connect with onshore refineries and storage facilities via subsea pipelines. Terminals near population centers bypass the need for conventional jetty.

Mitigating Risks with Subsea Pipelines

Conventional pipelines require jetty terminals that are often located near populated areas, which pose safety risks.

IMODCO’s subsea pipelines move ammonia transfers away from shore, mitigating the danger of ammonia leaks in these areas.

ABS Supports Safe Energy Transition

Miguel Hernandez, ABS Senior Vice President, Global Offshore, emphasized ABS’s commitment to supporting a safe energy transition for the marine and offshore sectors, particularly expecting a rise in ammonia production and transportation.

“ABS is committed to supporting a safe energy transition for the marine and offshore industries. As ammonia production and transportation are expected to grow rapidly in the coming decades, it is critical we take every step possible to mitigate risks and preserve the environment,” said Miguel Hernandez.

IMODCO’s Contribution to Safe Ammonia Transfers

IMODCO, with over 65 years of offshore expertise, is contributing to the safe transfer of ammonia by supporting the use of jetty-less systems. This collaboration with ABS and other stakeholders promotes safety and cost-efficiency in ammonia transfers.

“Leveraging over 65 years of offshore expertise, IMODCO, representing SBM Offshore, is contributing to a better and safer world by supporting safe ammonia transfers. In collaboration with key value chain stakeholders, including ABS, we are committed to promoting the use of jetty-less systems to enhance safety and cost efficiency for large and frequent ammonia transfers,” said Philippe Lavagna, Product Account Manager for Terminals for New Energies, IMODCO.

Ongoing Collaboration for Global Energy Transition

ABS and IMODCO plan to continue their partnership following the Gastech 2024 meeting. They would work together to develop solutions that support the global energy transition.

It includes more sustainable practices in the marine and offshore industries.

As a leader in classification services, ABS is well-positioned to support the safe integration of new technologies as the marine and offshore industries transition toward sustainable practices.
