  • New Cargo and Fuel Gas Systems Aim to Tackle Boil-Off Gas Challenges.
  • Innovative Designs Unveiled at Nor-Shipping 60th Anniversary.
  • HHI Targets IMO 2050 Goals with Methane-Slip Minimising FGSS.

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has given the green light for Approval in Principle (AIP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) for two cutting-edge systems: Hi-ecoGAS and Hi-neoGAS. These innovations mark a significant leap forward in cargo handling and fuel gas supply technology, specifically designed for gas carriers, reports ABS.

Advanced Solutions for Boil-Off Gas Management

Hi-ecoGAS and Hi-neoGAS are designed to address the challenges posed by boil-off gas (BOG) in dual-fuel engines. These systems are equipped with an optimised Fuel Gas Supply System (FGSS) that ensures efficient fuel gas delivery to engines, along with an LNG subcooling system that effectively manages boil-off gas (BOG), helping to reduce emissions and enhance safety.

Showcased at Nor-Shipping 60th Anniversary

The AIP was officially unveiled during the 60th anniversary celebration of the Nor-Shipping maritime trade fair, marking a key milestone in bringing these systems to market. ABS carried out thorough design reviews to ensure that everything meets both class and statutory standards.

ABS Endorsement and Commitment to Safety

“Boil-off gas can present significant challenges to storage and transportation, which can lead to safety hazards. ABS is proud to use our expertise as the world’s leading classification society for gas carriers to support HD HHI and HD KSOE with these new designs,” said Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at ABS.

HD HHI Focuses on Decarbonization

“Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has recognized that developing a fuel gas supply system (FGSS) that minimizes methane slip is a critical step in the era of decarbonization. HHI expects that its newly designed cargo handling and fuel gas supply system will make a significant contribution toward achieving the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2050 Net Zero target,” said Hong-Ryeul Ryu, Executive Vice President and CTO of HD HHI’s Shipbuilding Business division.

HD KSOE Reinforces Global Leadership

“The development of Hi-ecoGAS and Hi-neoGAS strengthens HD KSOE’s and HHI’s ability to meet the evolving needs of global shipowners. As a leading provider of advanced shipbuilding solutions, HD KSOE remains committed to driving innovation and leading the global shipbuilding industry,” said Kwang-Pil Chang, Senior Vice President and CTO of HD KSOE.

ABS: A Legacy of Leadership in Gas Carrier Classification

With more than 50 years under their belt, ABS has firmly established itself as a leader in the classification of gas carriers, covering everything from liquefied natural gas (LNG) to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and even the latest emerging fuels. Their endorsement represents a major leap forward in the advancement and worldwide adoption of cutting-edge gas handling technologies.
