35

ABS reinforced its dedication to global maritime safety by sponsoring the 2025 AMVER Awards ceremony, which recognized the outstanding contributions of Norwegian shipowners and operators to the AMVER (Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue) system.

This U.S. Coast Guard-managed initiative plays a critical role in coordinating global search and rescue operations.

Honoring a Culture of Maritime Responsibility

The 2025 event celebrated 259 vessels operated by 24 Norwegian shipping companies for their voluntary participation in the AMVER system. These vessels received diplomas in acknowledgment of their readiness to respond to distress signals and support seafarers in need, regardless of nationality. The ceremony also honored two Norwegian captains with Certificates of Merit for their heroic efforts in a 1980 rescue operation involving American sailors.

Strengthening Global Safety Through Partnerships

ABS and AMVER share a common mission: to safeguard lives at sea. ABS Senior Vice President Joshua Divin praised the enduring relevance of AMVER and the technological progress that has enhanced its reach. U.S. Coast Guard AMVER Program Director Benjamin Strong also acknowledged Norwegian shipowners for setting high standards in voluntary maritime safety and highlighted ABS’s consistent support in promoting this cause.

The AMVER Awards not only honor the lifesaving contributions of seafarers and shipowners but also reinforce the global maritime community’s commitment to mutual aid and safety. Through continued collaboration between ABS, the U.S. Coast Guard, and responsible operators like those from Norway, the culture of voluntary rescue support grows stronger, ensuring a safer sea for all.
