Speaking at London International Shipping Week 2025, ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki called on the maritime industry to ask a crucial question with every new development: “Does it make us safer?”
He stressed that safety must remain the foundation of innovation, from vessel design to crew training. Wiernicki highlighted the importance of investing in people, noting that seafarers are central to safe and resilient operations despite advances in digital systems and automation.
As shipping faces regulatory, environmental, and geopolitical challenges, Wiernicki urged leaders to ensure that technology and efficiency never come at the expense of human safety, which he described as the industry’s most valuable asset.
