- Breakerless MVDC becomes first to receive ABS NTQ.
- ABS highlights collaboration for next-gen vessel tech.
- HD KSOE targets zero-carbon electric propulsion leadership.
ABS reports that it has granted a New Technology Qualification (NTQ) certificate to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for their innovative electric propulsion solution, the Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) power system designed for ships.
Introducing the Breakerless MVDC Power System
The Breakerless-MVDC Power System is built on HD Hyundai’s modular propulsion drive system and proudly holds the title of being the first in the world to earn an ABS NTQ certificate. This certification showcases the technology’s viability and readiness, thanks to a thorough evaluation program.
Industry Collaboration
Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, said: “Collaboration is key to safely accelerating the technological progress that the maritime industry demands. We’re excited to deepen our relationship with HD KSOE and HD HHI, jointly exploring forward-thinking solutions that will shape and refine the next generation of vessels.”
Advancing Marine Electrification
Sanghyun Kim, HD KSOE Senior Vice President, stated: “The MVDC power system, now certified as new technology by ABS for both commercial and naval vessels, represents our advanced capability in marine electrification and our success in overcoming existing technological barriers. We aim to lead the commercialisation of zero-carbon electric propulsion vessels.”
Long-Standing Partnership and Future Goals
The NTQ represents the latest milestone in a long-standing partnership between ABS, HD HHI, and HD KSOE. This collaboration began with an agreement made in 2024 to investigate medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) power systems for ships.
Looking ahead, the project team has some exciting goals lined up:
- Crafting new ABS requirements for high voltage systems
- Rolling out a new ABS notation
Existing Standards and NTQ Services
Currently, low-voltage systems are covered under the ABS Requirements for DC Power Distribution Systems for Marine and Offshore Applications. ABS New Technology Qualification services offer vendors and end-users a clear pathway to ensure that new technologies meet their intended functions and adhere to established performance standards.
