ABS Consulting has published a new paper to support vessel and facility operators preparing to meet the US Coast Guard’s Maritime Cyber Rule approaching training deadline on 12 January 2026.
ABS Consulting Highlights Cyber Training as Key to USCG Maritime Compliance
The document outlines the steps required to comply with the first phase of the regulation, which mandates role-specific cybersecurity training across all operational staff.
The paper, titled From Final Rule to Fully Trained: Practical Direction for Meeting the U.S. Coast Guard’s Maritime Cybersecurity Requirements, is the third in an ABS Consulting series on maritime cyber risk.
It focuses on training as the foundation of compliance, highlighting the growing threat of cyberattacks and the operational and financial consequences of a breach for shipping companies and port facilities.
Under the USCG rules, staff must be trained to recognise and report cyber threats and implement countermeasures to mitigate risks. ABS Consulting notes that non-compliance could lead to penalties or interruptions to operations.
The company has also introduced a set of online, role-based courses built around real-world maritime scenarios, named the MTSA Cybersecurity Training Series, which aims to enable operators to track training progress, demonstrate compliance and prepare teams ahead of the January 2026 deadline.
