In a significant event for South America’s maritime and offshore sectors, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) hosted its first-ever South America Regional Committee meeting. Maritime and offshore leaders from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and other countries gathered to discuss innovations, trends, and challenges shaping the region’s industries.
Key Discussions at the Meeting
The event focused on energy transition, digital transformation, and regulatory changes affecting the maritime sector. ABS Senior Vice President Vassilios Kroustallis emphasized ABS’s long-standing role in South America, particularly as the leader in floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units. The committee also explored topics like alternative fuels—methanol, ammonia, and nuclear reactor technologies—and the implications of recent IMO regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.
