An annual ABS Korea National Committee Meeting was organized to bring together leaders from across the country to discuss matters of sustainability, technology, regulation, and market trends. The forum remains a very critical interface between ABS and key industry stakeholders that sparks dialogues on safety and emerging challenges in the maritime sector, reports ABS.
ABS Leadership in Awards Enhancement
John McDonald, ABS President and COO, highlighted ABS’s recent successes, announcing its position as the global leader in order book share. He reported that ABS has expanded its fleet to 297 million gross tons, encompassing over 11,500 assets.
Market Trends and ABS Activities in Korea
Seong-Hun Kim, ABS Director of Business Development, presented data on key market trends such as the energy transition and emerging markets opportunities, as well as activities in Korea where 90 joint development projects have already been completed since 2022. Activities have involved green clean energy transportation, digitalization, and applied research projects.
Regulatory Developments
As part of the business programme, ABS Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Stamatis Fradelos delivered a detailed examination of the new regulatory landscape, with particular emphasis on the upcoming FuelEU regulation, effective from January 1, 2025.
Focus on Digitalization and Decarbonization
Sung Ick Kim, President and CEO of SK Shipping, who officiated the event, said digitalization and decarbonization are key priorities in the maritime industry. He thanked ABS for its efforts and achievements in these two areas.
A Platform for Collaboration
The committee meetings give a forum for ABS members, including owners, operators, charterers, and representatives from flag administrations, shipbuilding, insurance, and owner associations. These forums provide dialogue with ABS leaders over technical, operational, and regulatory challenges facing the maritime sector.
